Abashiri Prison, operating on the side of Mount Tento, was closed in 1984, but the prison cells have been transported to this museum exactly as they were used. Six one-story wooden buildings recreate a story in vivid detail of severe conditions back then, yet they also relate a confounding story of how released inmates became repeat offenders and were sent back. Even the judges' courtrooms have been reconstructed here from 1994. We will provide tour guides for larger groups, but even individuals who give advance notice will get guided tours. A must. |
